David Cohen wrote an article in The Daily Caller under the heading “Jonathan Alter thinks you’re stupid“. The article was an attack on Alter for his recent column titled “Obama Must Get Bold, Tell Republicans ‘It’s On’” at Bloomberg.com. Cohen also attacked Obama and went on the promulgate the usual Conservative theories about “tax eform” and “regulations”.
Here is my response to Cohen:
This is a nice piece of fantasy, interspersed with childish anti-Obama attacks.
Let’s start with the hoary old fantasy that tax cuts, or tax reform that reduces taxes, will create jobs. This is patently untrue. The Bush tax cuts and tax loopholes have resulted in corporations paying the lowest effective tax rates since World War Two. So where are the hordes of jobs the multinationals should have created in America over the past ten years? Did I hear a pin drop? Almost all the jobs they’ve created have been overseas, where they’ve found slave labor. The bottom line is that trickle-down economics, or supply-side economics, is a total failure. In the words of former President George H. W. Bush, it’s “voodoo economics”. Pity the son was not smart enough to learn from the father.
Now to your childish attacks on President Obama. You are aware, I hope, that Obama’s stimulus plan included tax breaks for genuine small businesses, which create the majority of the jobs in America. These tax breaks are about to expire and our magnificent GOP and Tea Party combo have indicated that they will not be extending them. Indeed, these magnificent Anti-Americans have blocked just about all of Obama’s job creating proposals and have gone so far as to engage in job-killing endeavors .. such as spending cuts during an economic crisis. This priceless idiocy and their attempts to hold America hostage have caused untold economic damage to America’s economy. But, I am sure that Conservatives like you will praise these idiots.
And, finally, let me address the nonsense about regulations. We have just seen what de-regulated capitalism has done to America. Yet, people like you become totally mindless when rational regulations are imposed. Regulations that control pollution are vital to America and Americans. They protect our health, the health of our crops and livestock, and the health of our rivers, lakes and seas. The economic loss from pollution far outweighs any additional costs incurred by preventing it. America’s big businesses are more concerned about maximizing profits, than about being good citizens.
Now, Obama will, I’m sure, come up with some good job-creating proposals. He has before, but has been blocked at those times by GOP and Tea Party anti-Americanism. I’m sure they will do so again – because they are far more interested in destroying Obama and pandering to their corporate and rich donor-masters, than they are in the re-growth of America and the American middle class.
Just to close, I guess many will accept your fantasies as facts, but Real Americans will see it for what it is – a puerile attempt to prop up a failed economic “theology” and a childish attack on President Obama.
